Tesla Model S Plaid – Tesla returned to the Nürburgring with an S-model powertrain, with a refreshing aerodynamic package that includes the addition of side vents and a massive rear diffuser. The electric car manufacturer from California is returning to the famous German racetrack in an attempt to beat its lap record of 7:23 set last month.
With high hopes of approaching the sub-7 minute lap time this time around, Tesla’s three-car prototype with a refreshed, performance-focused body kit is expected to pull even further away from the track performance rival Porsche Taycan.

A wide-bodied blue S model with a “dual motor” badge featured a prominently modified side vent behind each flared front fender, presumably added to improve airflow and reduce aerodynamic lift. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, side vents are commonly found on high-performance vehicles and are designed to combat the turbulent airflow created in the wheel well due to tire rotation. The change becomes more and more expensive at high speeds.

Also spotted a massive rear diffuser on the refreshing blue Plaid Model S. Rear diffusers are designed to increase downforce at high speeds by accelerating low-pressure air under the car and channeling it through the rear of the vehicle. By smoothing airflow and reducing drag, the rear diffuser can also help with handling.
All of these new features, including the large rear spoiler with Gurney valve, apparently underwent a month of simulation testing between Tesla’s visits to the actual Nürburgring. Assuming that Tesla’s lap time last month was just a benchmark test to determine the vehicle’s basic performance, the extra steps taken by the Silicon Valley automaker prove one thing: They eclipse every record set by any car that is set in it. We already know that the company is planning an extended stay in Green Hell with the addition of an in-track supercharger installation, as well as Elon Musk’s further plans to smash all-time records with the 2020 Roadster. A few months ago, Shaw produced and posted a “first impression” video of the Model S Plaid, as well as a “hands-on” review. Both were successful, as expected. The latest Plaid video from Shaw is basically the sequel to those videos, though it’s longer, much more in-depth, and most of all, a lot of fun to watch.
Interestingly, like most of us, Shaw does not own a Model S Plaid. Instead, he rented the Tesla from Toro for a few days. During that time, he took people for rides and put together a thorough review of the car, detailing features, driving performances, some quibbles about the car, build quality issues, and more.
Shaw is impressed with the car as a whole, and that’s basically what we heard from almost everyone. He plans to eventually buy one, but he’s unhappy that he’s now seen three S sedans with major problems.
He talks about one of the worst Tesla paint jobs he’s ever seen, exposed screws behind the side mirrors and a loose button on the tailgate, to name a few. Shaw makes it clear that although first runs of new cars often have problems, especially if they are Tesla vehicles, a car should not be delivered in such condition. If we’re talking about $130,000, that’s simply unthinkable.
